Akshaya Tritiya: What, Why, When?

What is Akshaya Tritiya?

Akshaya Tritiya is also known as Akti or Akha Teej and is a highly auspicious day for Hindu and Jain communities. It is one of the most materially and spiritually significant days because it is considered ideal for new beginnings and is a very important occasion for Lord Krishna's clan followers, who believe that a new journey should always begin with complete faith in divinity.

The word Akshaya means “eternal” and Tritiya means “third day” signifying that it is celebrated on the third lunar day of Shukla Paksha of the Vaisakha month in Hindu calendar and is celebrated for several spiritual and historical reasons but the two main stories behind its celebration are about the legend of Lord Krishna and Kuchela and the other one is that of the Pandavas receiving the Akshaya Patra from Krishna.

Stories of Akshaya Tritiya and why it is important?

Story 1

This is the most famous story related to this occasion. It is the story of Kuchela (Sudama), a poor Brahmin and a schoolmate of Shri Krishna. He was very poor and struggled to provide even the necessities to his family. Although he was very hesitant to ask for favours from anyone, due to immense poverty and helplessness, he decided to visit Krishna to ask for some financial help.

When he was going to visit Krishna, his humility did not allow him to go empty-handed, so he took a handful of beaten rice (poha) with him as a simple gift to show his love and respect. On his journey to Krishna’s palace, Kuchela faced a lot of problems, yet he never lost his hope. But when he arrived at Krishna’s palace, he felt unworthy and unwelcome in the presence of royalty all around. However, when Krishna saw him, he rushed to embrace his old friend with tears of joy and washed his feet by making him sit on the throne.

When Krishna noticed the small bag in the hand of his schoolmate, he grabbed it and ate a handful of ‘poha.’ Kuchela was lost in the joy of Krishna’s love and was unable to believe his eyes that Krishna, the Supreme Lord who owns the entire universe, was eating his poha with such delight.

This entire exchange between Krishna and Sudama reveals how deeply the Atithi Devo Bhava (Guests are God) concept is inculcated in our tradition. Krishna treated him like a God, and the poor Brahmin was so happy and content that he forgot about any materialistic blessing and returned home empty-handed.

But on reaching his village, Sudama could not find his old hut. He was not able to recognise his surroundings because his old hut was replaced by a palace, his wife and children were wearing fine clothes, and everything that was old and worn out was replaced with new things.

At the very first instance, Sudama realized that Krishna had rewarded and helped him and it was the ‘leela’ (act of magical blessings that could not be deciphered) of divinity. Lord Krishna had granted him prosperity not for meager offering but for his pure devotion.

Therefore, this legend signifies that we should be sincere in our devotion to the Supreme power because the Lord is not moved by the value of what we give but by the love with which we offer it. So, the day Kuchela met Krishna was hence observed as Akshaya Tritiya.

Story 2

Another important story related to Akshaya Tritiya revolves around Lord Krishna’s miraculous gift of the Akshaya Patra to the Pandavas during their exile. Akshaya Patra is a bowl that gives an unlimited amount of food.

When the Pandavas were on their thirteen-year exile, they faced unusual trouble as when they were in the forest, they received many sages and guests daily, and entertaining them was a part of their royal dharma. Now the main problem for them was the curse of sage Durvasa (which they inherited through Draupadi) that once she is done with her meal, no food would remain for anyone else.

This created an impossible situation for them as to how they could feed all their guests. However, Lord Krishna appeared as a savior for the Pandavas and arrived with a solution, which is Akshaya Patra. It’s a magical vessel that was crafted by the divine architect Vishwakarma himself, and it would produce unlimited food until Draupadi ate her meal each day.

Akshaya Patra was given by Lord Krishna on Tritiya Day, and therefore it is believed that all investments on the day will only increase in value.

Story 3

There are some significant events also which are related to this day like this day is also the birthday of Lord Parshuram who is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu and according to Puranas this day also marks the beginning of Treta Yuga.

Story 4

Further on this day, Veda Vyasa began the composition of the Mahabharata, and it is believed that Sage Vyasa started narrating Mahabharata to Lord Ganesha on this day and Akshaya Tritiya is also the birth anniversary of Balram, elder brother of Lord Krishna. There is another legend that says that the river Ganga appeared on earth on this day.

Story 5

For the Jain community Akshaya Tritiya also holds a special place as it marks the day when Lord Rishabhadeva who was the first Tirthankara broke his year- long fast by consuming sugarcane juice.

Therefore, Akshaya Tritiya is celebrated to seek Lord Krishna’s blessings by showing our genuine dedication and starting fresh with faith that our efforts will last forever. It is not just about material wealth but about spiritual richness.
