    Vijayadashmi Shastra Pooja

The last day of Navratri is called the Dusshera. This day is celebrated to mark the victory of good over evil. Goddess Durga played the good to win over the evil Mahishsura who created threat to the Gods and Goddesses as well as common inhabitants of Earth misusing his powers. He made living on Earth difficult and so the Gods had to find a way to defeat this devil. They asked for Goddess Durga's help because Mahishasura had a boon which prevented his death by hands of any man. He took the same for granted forgetting completely that the boon did not cover safety from women. This is how Goddess Durga chased and laid a trap for Mahishasura and finally she was able to bait him to walk right into the trap laid and eventually gotten himself killed. In this act, he evaded a lot of powerful Gods but his overconfidence couldn't take him much far. Similarly, Dusshera marks the victory of good over evil and righteous over forceful suppression.  This day also marks the victory of Lord Rama's victory over Ravana, the devil who kidnapped Goddess Sita, the wife of Lord Ram and made her subject to extortion and bait Lord Ram into submission. • Mata Siddhidatri Pooja

    Mata Siddhidatri Pooja

Siddhidatri is the ninth form of Goddess Durga who is worshipped on the ninth day of Navratri. The name Siddhidatri suggests that she is the provider of wisdom, Siddhi meaning Wisdom, and Datri meaning provider. She is the last form of Durga worshiped but is said to be the first form of Durga, or shakti to be formed. When the entire universe was a hot ball of fire and there was no life on the globe and the entire universe was sad, dark, and depressed, the first unit of light and shine that fell in place as a Swayambhoo (born on itself) was Goddess Siddhidatri. She gave life to plants, trees, animals, and humans. She made the Tridev (Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh) and she made compartmentalization of their departments of work. She then created her 2 clones as wives of Brahma and Vishnu as Saraswati and Lakshmi. She also created an Adi Shakti which will later be born as Parvati when Siddhidatri merges with her to become the wife of Lord Shiva. She also created eight superpowers for the proper administration and running of the world. Siddhidatri is the female administrator of the world as against Vishnu, who is the male administrator of the world. She also created the Ardh Narishwar Avatar of Lord Shiva to make up for gender between the male and female sides. She sits on a lotus and holds lotus, mace, Shankha, and Chakra in her four hands. She is said to hold the complete knowledge of the entire world and nothing in the world unnoticed by her. • Mata Mahagauri Pooja

    Mata Mahagauri Pooja

Mahagauri Mata is the eighth goddess to be worshipped in Navratri. She is a symbol of brightness and peace. The name Mahagauri means extremely white. Maha means extremely and Gauri means white. The story behind her existence was that after Kaali had killed Raktabeej and had calmed down to become Parvati, she still had a black skin tone. She wanted to get rid of the color, so she worshipped Lord Brahma. He gave her a boon to take a holy dip in Mansarovar river and gain back her original form. The black skin of Parvati became a Shakti Swaroop called Kaushiki and the extremely fair complexion attained by Parvati kept her name Mahagauri. Meanwhile, Kaushiki killed Dhumralochan who was another budding demon with an aim to create restlessness on Earth. After killing Dhumralochan, she went to merge with Chandi and Chamunda to hunt down Shumbha and Nishumbha. After all the killings and establishment of peace, all the forms of Parvati and Durga combined together with Mahagauri to make a wheatish complexion named Gauri, another name of Parvati. There is one more reference that states that Lord shiva wanted to provide a worship form for the dark-skinned people, so he secretly turned the color of Parvati to Black and called her Kaali and Shyama, both meaning black in color, playfully. Parvati did not find it a funny idea and was really angry. She went to talk to Lord Brahma about this who told her to take a dip in the Mansarovar river and redeem her skin color. She did get a lot fairer and was named Mahagauri due to her blinding white aura. But soon she felt to preserve the dark skin and gave it a shakti form called Kaushiki. Layer, she merged all her formats and became Gauri from Mahagauri. Mahagauri rides a white bull, wears a white saree, holds a white lotus in one of her hands, white kamandal in second hand, white trident in a third hand, and the fourth hand is for blessing the devotees. Benefits of Mahagauri Pooja: To gain an atmosphere of peace and sanity To hold auspicious and rich thoughts about human existence To gain endurance against everything happening in the world To clean your heart from malicious thoughts and actions To remove malice from your heart and make your kids pious To gain a peaceful atmosphere for you and your loved ones

  • Mata Kalratri Pooja

    Mata Kalratri Pooja

Kalaratri means the server of the night who is black in color. Kala means Black and Ratri means night. Goddess Kalaratri is thus called a savior of the night. There are multiple stories of Devi Kalaratri and her birth. It is said that once Parvati was bathing and the Gods came to pray to her for her help in tackling the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha. Since Parvati couldn’t answer immediately, she created Ambika (Chandi) for the work. When Shumbha and Nishumbha heard of Ambika, they sent Chanda and Munda, their representatives to fight Ambika. Ambika decided to take over Chanda and created Kali to take over Munda. Both Chanda and Munda got killed and Ambika came to be known as Chandi (the one who killed Chand) and Kaali came to be known as Chamunda (The one who killed Munda). When the news of the death of Chanda and Munda traveled to Shumbha and Nishumbha, they decided to send Raktabeej, a more fierce demon to fight Kaali. Raktabeej had a boon that if his blood drop fell on earth, each drop will create a new and more powerful demon. Kaali tried defeating Raktabeej in a normal fight, but with each death, there were more than a thousand new Raktabeej that got birth. Goddess Kaali finally lost her control and in anger, she killed the main Raktabeej and drank all his bad blood to avoid any more creation. With this, the other demons also died. But the rage that Kaali had acquired in the procedure made her violent. Also, the dirty blood of Raktabeej made her really dark in complexion and burn from insides. She started killing everyone in her vicinity and was blinded by her anger. The Gods went to Lord Shiva and sought help. God Shiva lied down on the way where Kaali was about to cross. The moment Lord Shiva came under her feet, she realized, she was standing at the chest of her own husband. The gush of guilt and sorrow in Kaali’s heart realized that she was Parvati and was meant to save the world she was destroying. To make up for the anger and guilt together, Kaali didn’t understand what to do and she bit her tongue to remove all anger there and finish the episode, thereby, calming down. Since all this happened at night, which is called the resting time of animals, she was called the Kaalratri. Later, Kalaratri chased down Shumbha and Nishumbha and killed them. Devi Kalratri is worshipped on the seventh day of Navratri to celebrate the power of winning over the evil. There are some other references that suggest Kalratri was made to prevent people and animals at night from evil spirits because the night is a resting phase and only demons are awake at night. So Kalaratri transforms into a fierce attacker and guards animals and humans from being attacked by the demons and evil spirits. With the ray of dawn, Kalratri also disappears only to return at dusk. Benefits of Kalratri Pooja: To stay away from evil spirits To stay clear from darkness and soak in the most positivity while the sun shines To be able to make fearless moves To stay positive in the most difficult times To attain powers to sustain with the appearance you have without any insecurities To gain immense powers and bravery to keep away your evils and enemies

  • Mata Katyayani Pooja

    Mata Katyayani Pooja

Katyayani is the sixth form of Goddess Durga. Katyayani means the one who brings anger and revolt against a particular way of wrong being. Katyayani took over the devil Mahishasura after a pursuit of 9 days and finally killed him. Hence she is also called the Goddess of Anger and is worshipped as Mahishasurmardini. Generally, Goddess Katyayani is worshipped for gaining a good husband. This was started by Radha, Sita, and Rukmini. Katyayani is also called Adishakti Parashakti or Uma Katyayani Gauri Kali Haimvati Ishwari. She is referred close to the other war Goddess Bhadrakali and Chandika, who also are forms of Goddess Parvati, an incarnation of Goddess Durga. When the demon Mahishasura made life difficult for the Gods and tried captivating them as his hostage to take over the world, the Gods went to Lord Shiva for help. Lord Shiva combined the energies of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva and gave birth to Durga Shakti. She incarnated as Katyayani when Rishi Katyayana worshipped her to take birth as War Goddess. Vamana Purana says Katyayani was born to reflect the light of the Sun through her three eyes and finish the bad on Earth using her fierce look of long, curly, black hair and 18 hands. She holds a trident, Sudarshan Chakra, Shankha, Conch Shell, dart, bow, arrow, thunderbolt, mace, Rosary, water pot, shield, sword, battle-ax, and 4 other fighting weapons from Shiva, Vishnu, Varuna, Vayu, Agni, Surya, Indra, Kubera, Brahma, Kala, and Vishwakarma respectively. She collected all these and marched towards the Mysore hill when an aide of Mahishasura saw her and went on to pass the word to Mahishasura. Mahishasura got attracted to Katyayani and offered her his love and attraction towards her. Katyayani kept a condition that she needs to fight a fair fight with him, and only if he can defeat Katyayani, Mahishasura can have her as his love interest. This raged Mahishasura and he took shape of a Mahisha (Bull), thereby the name, and started fiercely attacking Katyayani. But Katyayani knew how to evade all attacks thrown at her. She was waiting for the right moment to attack and the moment Mahishasura slipped a little from his stance, Katyayani jumped from her lion fiercely with a javelin in her hands and threw down Mahishasura. She then cut off his head with the trident and waved it in the air as a sign of victory. This is why she is called Mahishasurmardini, or the one who killed Mahishasura. This made her a war Goddess and she was worshipped on the sixth day of Navratri to commemorate her victory over the evil. Benefits of Katyayani Pooja: To gain fierce confidence in anything you take up to perform To make calculated and informed decisions at the right time To learn to strike once but with complete preparation To gain the confidence to have an uninterrupted stand in the decision-making process To get a good husband for marriage To give up on worldly materialistic pleasure (Moh Maya) and attain Salvation

Goddess Parvati is the wife of Lord Shiva and Lord Kartikeya is the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Also, Goddess Durga was created as a Shakti Swaroop by Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Brahma. So, technically Goddess Skandamata is the mother of Lord Kartikeya, as Goddess Skandamata is an incarnation of Lord Durga, which is an equivalent position of her to Goddess Parvati. Also, Lord Kartikeya learned the art of war from the Skandamata incarnation of Goddess Durga and thus, she was the one who gave birth to Lord Kartikeya as Lord Skanda or the one expert with war strategies and execution methodologies. Goddess Skandamata is worshipped on the fifth day of Navratri. Due to her fierce style and fearless attitude, her appearance portrays her four hands. One hand rides her lion, the second-hand holds out lotus, the third hand is held out in a boon position to grant all the wishes and the fourth hand is to hold Shankh. • Mata Chandraghanta Pooja

    Mata Chandraghanta Pooja

Chandraghanta means “The one who wears Moon and works at the sound of bells”. Parvati, the daughter of Himalayas had already fallen for Lord Shiva and had asked him to visit her home to meet her parents and family. Lord Shiva knew that he has a very charming and very pleasant personality. But he wanted to check if he was accepted for the materialistic needs, or the love is real. So he took his family of dead men and skeletons (as he is called the Shamshaan Nivaasi, the one who lives at the cemetery). This was to test if Parvati actually loves him as a person or for his powers. Goddess Parvati understood this, but she was worried about how her family will react to this. When her family saw this avatar of Lord Shiva, they were about to faint and deny the relationship. To save this from happening, Parvati transformed herself into Devi Chandraghanta. She looked a bit angry, scary, and fearless at the same time. She put on ten hands to hold Trident, Mace, Arrow, Bow, Sword, Lotus, Bell, and Waterpot. She holds out her hands in the Aashirwada position and rides the tiger with one hand. She wears a half-moon on her forehead and a garland of a lotus around her neck. This face of her made her parents relax a bit because they felt that this was a made for each other couple, but they were also very confused if they were happy with this couple. Parvati then persuaded Lord Shiva to arrive like a prince to charm her parents. Lord Shiva believed that Parvati’s love was genuine and he returned back with his family of normal people properly like a prince. Thus it was believed that worshipping Parvathi as Goddess Chandraghanta on the third day of Navratri provides for resolute decision making and selflessness. Benefits of Chandraghanta Pooja: To gain peace and harmony in the family To choose the correct partner for life To make up for selfishness and self-centered decisions To be in the good books of Goddess Durga To be confident enough to stand up to your decision making To hold the power of your own decisions

  • Mata Brahmacharini Pooja

    Mata Brahmacharini Pooja

Bramhacharini means the woman who pursues Vedic education. Goddess Parvati wanted to marry Lord Shiva. She was told that this will take a Tapasya of 5000 years. So Parvati set on to the journey of hardship after taking Vedic education by living in mountains and leaving behind all her worldly desires. This form of Parvati gave her the name Mata Bramhacharini. Meanwhile, all the Gods went to Lord Kamadeva (the God of love interest and attractive desires) to awaken Lord Shiva from his slumber and marry Parvati. The reason cited was that Lord Shiva’s son could only kill Tarakasur due to his powers and wit. Lord Kamadeva shot an arrow of desire at Lord Shiva and this convinced him to find a girl equally suitable for being his wife. He learned about Parvati and went to meet her in disguise to know if her prayers were real. He tried disturbing Bramhacharini and discouraging her from the Tapasya. Parvati paid a deaf ear to all the distractions and continued to worship. Lord Shiva was impressed with this and felt attracted to Parvati’s Bramhacharini Swaroop and got married to her. Thus, Mata Bramhacharini told everyone that whoever worships her on the second day of Navratri will receive the most serious resolution of their lives, if followed seriously and passionately. • Mata Shailputri Pooja

    Mata Shailputri Pooja

Shailputri means Daughter of the Mountains. Parvati was the daughter of Himalaya, the king of mountains. She was playing with her friends near a pond of lotus one day when she saw a cow approaching her in pain and agony. Parvati wanted to know the reason so she placed her hand on the cow’s forehead and closed her eyes to meditate. Parvati saw a demon Tarika, sister of Tarkasur, who was sent on Earth to kill Parvati. The reason was obvious. Parvati was the daughter of the most powerful king, Himalaya. So Parvati herself was very powerful and mighty. Killing Parvati will make it easy for Tarkasur to kill Himalaya. But Tarika saw a herd of cows on the way and felt hungry. She started feeding on the cows one by one. The shepherd of the herd tried to take on Tarika but was also killed. One cow tried to escape from the herd slowly so that she could get some help. This was how Parvati met the cow in pain. When Parvati got to know about the situation, she knew that to defeat Tarika is very difficult if taken on directly. So she decided to play a trick. Parvati took shape of a small mountain (Shail) and asked the cow to hide behind her and cry loudly. Due to the sound, Tarika came running to eat the cow. But Shail did not let her approach the cow. This fight between Tarika and Shail went on for a long. Due to this Parvati’s friends have time to call for King Himalaya. Meanwhile, the friends and villagers of shepherd also came in searching for the cows and shepherds. By then, Tarika was already furious and tired and did not know what to do next. So she took a leap of anger to finally kill Shail first and then take on the cow. This gave Shail the opportunity to change to Parvati in split second with her trident ready to kill. The moment Tarika was in the air, Parvati charged upon her with her trident and killed Tarika by force. Everyone who witnessed this saw a golden halo behind the head of Parvati. The cow went and got a lotus from the pond and handed it to Parvati. Himalaya then coined the term Mata Sahilputri for Parvati and Parvathi then said that anyone who worships cow before her with a lotus will be blessed with powers to fight evil spirits. Hence, worshipping Mata Shailutri on day 1 of Navratri gives freedom from evil spirits. Benefits of Mata Shailputri Pooja: To gain fearlessness from evil powers To get confidence to fight for the right over wrong To make rapid and quick decisions at the right time as to when and how to act.
