Description
Goddess Durga is the fearless goddess of prosperity, wealth, and power. She is believed to hold the hands of her devotees through all the thick and thin. It is believed that when the Buffalo headed Mahishasura gained Lord Brahma’s blessings to be extremely powerful, he expressed his wish to gain immortality. Lord Brahma rather said that Mahishasura cannot be killed by any man or animal. Only a woman can kill him. Mahishasura was very confident that he can out-power any woman. So he attacked the heaven, the earth, and the hell together. He also captured Devraj Indra. All the Gods were terrorized by this act of Mahishasura and they went to Lord Brahma with a complaint. Lord Brahma told them about the wish and asked them to ask Lord Vishnu if he can provide for a Shakti who can get rid of Mahishasura. Lord Vishnu then created a Shakti Swaroop with the help of Goddess Lakshmi. Lord Vishnu, Lord Brahma, and Lord Shiva combined their powers and gave birth to the fearless and the most powerful Shakti Swaroop, Goddess Durga. Goddess Durga went on to pick a fight with Mahishasura and killed him with her Trishul (Trident) on the last day of Pitra Paksha (Mahalaya).
